Roses for Mother’s Day

by Kelly Klapstein

Hello Canadian Scrapbookers!  One of my favourite days of the year is approaching…Mother’s Day.  So I thought I’d make a couple of cards for this special occasion and show you how to create spiral roses.

What is Mother’s Day without flowers, especially roses? Here is a tutorial that demonstrates how to create two kinds of spiral roses…one is do-it-yourself, and the other is designed using a wonderful Spellbinders Donna Salazar Shapeabilities die called “Bitty Blossoms.”

For both cards, I used Karen Foster Designs Mother’s Day themed patterned paper and stickers…

SUPPLIES:  Karen Foster Design patterned paper, stickers, Scrapper Spool,  Bazzill cardstock,  Spellbinders Bitty Blossoms Shapeabilities, Sizzix Big Shot, Fiskars border punch, May Arts ribbon, Ranger Industries Glossy Accents, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

The first spiral flower is a simple “Do-It-Yourself” technique.

  1.  Cut a circle approximately 2” in diameter from patterned paper. (NOTE:  Varying the size of your circle will  alter the finished size of your flower).

2.  Beginning anywhere on the outer edge of the circle, cut a spiral toward the centre.

3.  Your finished spiral will have a small round centre.

4. Using a bamboo skewer (or similar item), begin with the outer end of the spiral and wind tightly.

5. Continue winding towards the centre of the spiral

6. Stop winding when you arrive at the centre, leaving the inner circle as the base.

7. Apply fast-drying liquid adhesive to the base centre and hold spiral flower onto base until completely dry.

8. Your spiral rose will look like this.

The next spiral flower is made with the Spellbinders Donna Salazar die “Bitty Blossoms.”

1. I used the 2 larger dies in this Spellbinders set along with my Big Shot.

2. Cut your Bitty Blossoms with the patterned paper face down onto the cutting edge of the dies and roll through the Big Shot or other die cutting machine.

3. This is what your dies will look like after they have cut through the paper.

4. Remove the spirals from the dies.

5. Again, using a skewer or similar item, begin wrapping the spiral flower tightly, starting at the outside end.

6. After you’ve finished wrapping, apply fast-drying liquid adhesive to the centre base of the flower.

7. The finished rose will look like this.

8. You can add your roses to your cards along with ribbon.

9. Or adhere them onto your card next to your sentiment.

The DIY simple spiral roses are a lovely element on any card….

The Spellbinders “Bitty Blossoms” add an elegant touch as well….

This Mother’s Day, celebrate by making your own roses!

Happy crafting!
