Storing your dies
by Sue Sykes
Hi everyone! Rather than share a layout or card today, I’m going to share a project that I just completed for my studio!
Many of us are just as preoccupied with organizing our scrapbooking supplies, as we are with using them. You can find ideas in magazines, online galleries, Pinterest and on blogs across the web. When I started my studio renovation a few years ago (yes, it’s been a long process!), I scoured the Internet for ideas on storing my products.
When I came across this post I immediately started to think how I could adapt this idea for my scrapping space – there are no cupboards in my studio, and I find that I use my products more often if they are on display. I had a few criteria that I wanted to meet:
1) I wanted something I could “grow” into, as my collection grew (as we all know it will…)
2) It had to fit somewhere on my studio wall where it would be accessible but not obtrusive.
3) I wanted to keep this as cost effective as I could.
First things first: the base. All of the frames I wanted to recycle were too small, so I repurposed an old magnetic board from Ikea (no longer available, but it measures around 16″ x 23″). Best of all, it tucks perfectly into a small space on one of my walls.
The magnetic surface: While the large magnetic vent covers are available at Bed, Bath & Beyond for only $13.99, the nearest store is 2 hours away from me and shipping was nearly $10. Home Depot carries a 3 pack of the smaller size but after checking my local store, I discovered that they are only available through online ordering. However, in persevering, I found 5″ x 8″ self-adhesive magnetic sheets available at my local dollar store for only $1 each.
Here’s what I ended up with – and I’m thrilled with the results!
To jazz it up and to coordinate with my studio colours, I covered the edges with a combination of 7Gypsies gaffer tape and K&Company Smash tape.
Rather than label the die positions at the bottom of each space, I added my labels UNDERNEATH the dies themselves – this not only used less room on my magnetic board, but it’s less visible, too.
I LOVE how handy this keeps my dies… Now, to add to my collection!
Cheers,
