Christmas Stamping with Cathy Caines and Stampin’ Up!

Stamping Wood Slices

Hello.

Good morning Jack Frost.

Hello world!

It wasn’t until December that it arrived, but the snow has fallen in Newfoundland and will undoubtedly remain until long into Spring. If you are like me, you are enjoying the Season already as you trim the tree, attend parades, dance at the office holiday parties and, of course, send out a gazillion Christmas and holiday cards.

But I quite like it.

The cold invites me to stay inside next to my fireplace and craft the night away. I created this card with a new fancy die called Sleigh Rides created by Stampin’ Up! as well as the Softly Falling Textured embossing folder (a must get). It was easy, not to mention gorgeous. The iridescent ice glimmer paper looks exactly like snow.

Every year I make each of my children a personalized ornament. This year I gathered the clear bulbs and set out to create the best ornament ever. However, I came across a pack of wood slices that I got from my local dollar store and the inspiration took a different shape.

I created 2 picture ornaments – one for my son, Jack and another for my daughter Jane. One side was their name and the other side is a picture of them.

In order to get the picture onto the wood slice, I had to trace around the wood piece onto the picture as you can see in the picture. Once I had the circle made, I cut out the circle just slightly smaller than the circle itself to ensure I could see some bark. I also sanded down the edges around the photo.

In order to get the photo onto the wood slice I used the following steps:

  1. Lay your photo onto the wood slice to ensure you are happy with the shape.
  2. Once happy you need to punch a hole in the photo to get the ribbon through. My wood slices already had the holes since I bought them, but if you are making them from scratch, then you need to drill holes through the wood slice first. To do this, turn over the wood slice with the picture held in place. Take a pen or pencil and make a mark through the hole onto the back of your photo. Remove the photo and use a hole punch to pierce through.
  3. Apply Mod Podge or a matte medium onto the wood slice using a foam brush.
  4. Lay the photo onto the medium before it dries. Get all the air bubbles out.
  5. Apply another layer of Mod Podge or matte medium over top of the photo to protect it. Let it dry.

I also created three gift tags. I simply stamped using Stampin’ Up! Archival black ink onto the wood slice in order to achieve this quick look. This is ridiculous easy and ridiculously cool.

You can also heat emboss an image onto the wood slice. I created this gift tag for my niece, Emma. This gift tag can then be an ornament she keeps for years to come! Two Birds. One stone.
